BEWARE BAD ADVICE

It has come to our attention that a pet food delivery company are giving bad advice to people regarding feeding rates and ingredients which can be misleading to the customer and could affect the health of your pet.

If you are concerned that you think you may have received bad advice from a pet food retailer always check with your vet first.

1. Feeding rates.

It is claimed that manufacturers always exagerate the feeding guides of their foods by 15-20% in order for more food to be sold and therefore more profit to be made. This is NOT TRUE. In fact if you read the instructions on some brands of dog food they suggest that you may have to feed up to 50% MORE for young and active dogs.

Feeding guides and ingredients listings are included on packaging as a legal requirement. It would be immoral and legally wrong for manufacturers to lie about feeding rates for their foods. You should ALWAYS follow the manufacturers instructions as they are unique to that brand of food.

Guidelines are just that, guidelines ! Some dogs will require less food, some require more. This is based on various factors such as excercise, age, metabolism, health etc. but to suggest that manufacturers over estimate their feeding guides is simply ridiculous.

We provide a free pet weighing service using professional veterinary scales so we can ensure that your pet is eating correctly and will maintain a healthy weight.

2. Senior Foods

It has been claimed that you do not have to move dogs onto senior or diet foods as they get older.

This is partially true. You may not HAVE TO switch foods but in some circumstances we recommend that you do and you WILL see the benefits.

Senior / Diet foods do not need to be more expensive. In fact Trophy Pet Foods range of Senior and Diet foods is generally cheaper than our normal adult foods, simply because there is generally less meat content in it, therefore the food is cheaper to make. What is important is that your dog eats an appropriate food for its age.

3. Puppy Foods

It is claimed that you can safely move Puppies on to Adult food at 12 weeks. This is something we would never recommend and is, again, something to discuss with your vet. Our recommendation is that Puppy food should be fed until around 12 months and perhaps even longer for certain breeds of dog.

If you are in any doubt about advice you have been given by a pet food retailer we suggest consulting your vet for advice.
